How to Choose a Confirmation Saint

Saints and Confirmation

Choose a saint whose life helps you follow Christ, then learn enough about that person to explain your choice. Start by asking your parish what it requires: taking a new Confirmation name is a custom, not a universal requirement to replace your baptismal name.

A simple way to choose

  • Ask your catechist about the name form, deadline and any written reflection your parish needs.
  • Consider a virtue you want to grow in: patience, courage, generosity, prayer or perseverance.
  • Read reliable biographies of three saints. Look beyond a name you like or a single patronage label.
  • Pray about the choice and discuss it with your sponsor. Choose a concrete habit you can imitate.

Questions to take to a biography

  • What did this person actually do?
  • What difficulty did they face, and how did they respond?
  • Which details are well documented, and which belong to later tradition?
  • How could their example change my ordinary life?

Do I have to choose someone with my interests?

No. A shared occupation, country or interest can be a useful starting point, but you can also learn from a saint very different from you. The goal is a companion in faith, not a perfect personality match.

Can I keep my baptismal name?

This is a common option, particularly when it already connects you with a saint. Confirm the local practice with your catechist. If a name refers to several saints, specify which one you mean. Do not assume that every person described as “blessed” has already been canonized.

A short reflection template

I chose Saint ____. One part of their life that matters to me is ____. Their example challenges me to ____. During my preparation I will practise this by ____.

Use your own words. A sincere paragraph about one virtue is more useful than a copied biography.
