Saint Theodorus van der Eem was a priest of the Order of Observant Friars Minor who died a martyr’s death on July 9, 1572, at Brielle in the Netherlands, at about seventy-two years of age. He is counted among the Martyrs of Gorkum, a group of Catholic clergy seized during the religious violence of the early Dutch Revolt and put to death for refusing to renounce Catholic teaching, particularly on the Eucharist and the authority of the Pope. Pope Pius IX beatified the group in 1675’s recognition and canonized them in 1867.
