Who Was Saint Secundino de Córdoba?

Saint Secundino was a layman of Córdoba in Roman Spain, martyred in the year 306, at the close of the Diocletianic persecution, the last and most severe empire-wide campaign against Christians before Constantine’s later toleration of the faith.

Historical Setting

Spain’s Christian communities, though established for generations by this point, were not spared the final years of Diocletian’s persecution, which continued under his successors in various parts of the empire even after his own retirement in 305. Córdoba, an important Roman provincial capital, had an organized church that would, a few decades later, send a bishop to the landmark Council of Elvira.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Secundino de Córdoba

Secundino is remembered as one of the martyrs whose death came at the very end of the age of persecution, on the threshold of the peace the Church would soon receive under Constantine. His witness stands among the last sacrifices of that long era.

Canonization and Feast Day

No formal canonization process for Secundino is recorded, as expected for a martyr of this period. His cult is ancient and local, part of Córdoba’s memory of its own early Christian martyrs.
