Who Was Saint Samuel?

Samuel appears in Sacred Scripture as a child given to the service of the Lord at the sanctuary of Shiloh by his mother Hannah, who had prayed for a son and dedicated him in gratitude. He grew into the last of Israel’s judges and one of its greatest prophets, guiding the people through the pivotal transition from tribal leadership to the united monarchy, and it was Samuel who anointed both Saul and, after Saul’s disobedience, the young David as king.

Historical Setting

Samuel’s ministry unfolded at a turning point in Israel’s history, as the loosely confederated tribes governed by judges gave way to a centralized kingdom. His role bridged both eras: he served as the last of the charismatic judges raised up by God and as the prophetic figure who discerned and anointed Israel’s first kings, shaping the institution of monarchy that would define the nation’s future, including the line from which the Messiah would come.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Samuel

The Church honors Samuel as a model of a life wholly given over to God from childhood, and as a prophet who spoke God’s word to power without fear, rebuking even the king he himself had anointed when Saul strayed from obedience. His famous response to God’s call as a boy — a readiness to listen and obey — has become a touchstone of religious vocation.

Canonization and Feast Day

As a figure of the Old Testament who lived many centuries before the Church’s canonization process existed, Samuel’s veneration rests not on any formal process but on his place in Sacred Scripture itself and on the Church’s ancient liturgical memory of him, preserved in the Roman Martyrology under August 20.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

Samuel’s childhood prayer, traditionally rendered “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,” remains one of Scripture’s clearest models of openness to God’s call. His life invites Catholics of every age to cultivate that same readiness to listen for God’s voice amid the noise of daily life, and the courage to speak truth even to those in power.

A Prayer to Saint Samuel

Saint Samuel, prophet who listened for the voice of God from your youth, teach us to say with you, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Help us to hear God’s call clearly and to answer it with the same faithfulness you showed throughout your life. Amen.
