Who Was Saint Phêrô Nguyễn Văn Tự?
Nguyễn Văn Tự was a member of the Dominican order, which had maintained a missionary presence in Tonkin since the seventeenth century and had, by the nineteenth century, ordained a growing number of native Vietnamese friars. He was arrested and executed at Bắc Ninh on September 5, 1838, at about forty-one years old, in the same wave of persecution that claimed many other Tonkinese clergy that year.
Historical Setting
Vietnam’s Catholic communities, planted by Dominican and Paris Foreign Missions Society missionaries over the preceding two centuries, had grown into a substantial native clergy and laity by the early nineteenth century, which is precisely what made them a target of imperial suspicion. Successive royal edicts ordered believers to renounce their faith publicly, and those who refused — priests, catechists, and ordinary laypeople alike — were imprisoned, tortured, and in many cases beheaded or strangled.
Why the Church Remembers Saint Phêrô Nguyễn Văn Tự
The Church remembers Nguyễn Văn Tự as one of the native Vietnamese Dominicans who carried forward the order’s two-century missionary legacy in Tonkin, and who was willing to die rather than abandon either his religious vows or his priestly ministry to the persecuted Catholic community.
Canonization and Feast Day
Pope John Paul II canonized this martyr on June 19, 1988, together with 116 other Vietnamese Martyrs — Vietnamese clergy and laity alongside Spanish Dominican and French missionary priests — in one of the largest single canonization ceremonies in modern Church history. The cause had passed through beatification in 1900, decades earlier, before the final step of canonization was reached in 1988.
What Catholics Can Learn Today
Nguyễn Văn Tự’s membership in an international religious order shows how the universal Church and the local Vietnamese Church were woven together: a global community of Dominicans, rooted in a particular place, sharing the same fate as their people. His witness calls religious today to remain in solidarity with the local churches they serve, wherever that call leads.
