Saint Phêrô Nguyễn Văn Hiếu was a lay catechist of Western Tonking in northern Vietnam, martyred at Ninh Bình on April 28, 1840, at about fifty-six years of age. Like other catechists of his era, he bore front-line responsibility for teaching and sustaining Catholic communities under the pressure of Emperor Minh Mạng’s persecution. Beatified in 1900, he was canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II among the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs.
