Who Was Saint Mukasa Kiriwawanvu?
Mukasa served in the royal household of Buganda at a time when Catholic teaching, brought by the White Fathers missionaries, had taken firm hold among a number of the king’s young courtiers. His refusal to abandon that faith, in the tense atmosphere surrounding King Mwanga II’s escalating hostility to Christian converts, led to his death by burning at Namugongo at around twenty-four years of age.
Historical Setting
The persecution that produced the Uganda Martyrs unfolded over the course of 1885 and 1886, as King Mwanga II grew increasingly alarmed at the loyalty his young officials showed to a faith and moral code that limited his own absolute authority over them. The mass execution at Namugongo, in which dozens of converts died together, became a defining and foundational event for the Catholic Church’s rapid growth in Uganda and the wider East African region in the century that followed.
Why the Church Remembers Saint Mukasa Kiriwawanvu
The Church remembers Mukasa as one of the group of young men whose collective courage at Namugongo has come to symbolize the vitality of the African Church’s earliest converts, whose witness under direct threat from their own king helped establish Catholic Christianity as an enduring and deeply rooted presence in Uganda.
Canonization and Feast Day
Mukasa was beatified by Pope Benedict XV in 1920 and canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1964, dates that are firmly documented thanks to the Uganda Martyrs’ well-established and celebrated place in the modern history of the universal Church.
What Catholics Can Learn Today
Mukasa’s willingness, as a young man with a promising place at court, to risk everything rather than betray his faith speaks powerfully to anyone facing pressure to compromise their convictions for the sake of status or security. His example shows that genuine advancement in life can never be worth the price of one’s integrity before God.
A Prayer to Saint Mukasa Kiriwawanvu
Saint Mukasa Kiriwawanvu, who chose Christ over the favor of a king, pray for us when we are tempted to trade our convictions for worldly advantage. Strengthen us to remain faithful even when fidelity costs us dearly. Amen.
