Why the Church Remembers Saint Miguel

The Church remembers Miguel for demonstrating that a life devoted to teaching, carried out with humility and excellence over decades in the classroom, is itself a profound form of holiness, and for becoming a source of national pride and faith for the Ecuadorian Church as its first canonized saint.

Canonization and Feast Day

Miguel was beatified in 1977 and canonized in 1984 by Pope John Paul II, a canonization celebrated with particular joy in Ecuador as the recognition of its first native saint.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

Miguel’s path to sainthood through decades of ordinary classroom teaching, rather than dramatic public events, shows that the vocation of educator, faithfully and excellently lived, is itself sufficient ground for great holiness.

A Prayer to Saint Miguel

Saint Miguel Febres Cordero, teacher and Brother of the Christian Schools, watch over educators today who form the minds and hearts of the young. Help them to see, as you did, that patient teaching is itself a path to sanctity. Amen.
