Who Was Saint Matthêô Nguyễn Văn Đắc (Phượng)?

Nguyễn Văn Đắc, known also by the name Phượng, lived as an ordinary married layman in Northern Cochin at a time when Emperor Tự Đức’s edicts against Christianity had escalated into some of the deadliest persecution the Vietnamese Church had yet faced. He was arrested for his Catholic faith and put to death near Đồng Hới rather than trample on the cross or renounce Christianity, as the authorities of the period commonly demanded of captured Christians.

Historical Setting

The early 1860s marked the most violent stretch of anti-Catholic persecution in Vietnamese history, with imperial edicts ordering the branding, exile, or execution of Christians and the destruction of Christian villages. Tens of thousands died in this period, a scale of persecution that only began to ease after French military intervention and the treaties that followed in the 1860s.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Matthêô Nguyễn Văn Đắc (Phượng)

The Church remembers Nguyễn Văn Đắc as one of the many ordinary lay Vietnamese Catholics — fathers, husbands, farmers, and tradesmen — who were swept up in this persecution and chose death over apostasy despite having no public role in the Church beyond their own steadfast practice of the faith.

Canonization and Feast Day

Matthêô Nguyễn Văn Đắc was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II, together with the wider group of 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. Their shared feast falls on November 24.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

His witness, like that of so many of his lay companions, is a reminder that ordinary family life and quiet fidelity to the sacraments can, under persecution, become the very grounds of martyrdom. Catholics living an unremarkable daily faith can take heart that such fidelity is never small in God’s eyes.

A Prayer to Saint Matthêô Nguyễn Văn Đắc (Phượng)

Saint Matthêô Nguyễn Văn Đắc, husband and martyr, you held to your faith through one of the darkest persecutions your Church had known. Pray for families facing pressure to abandon their faith today, that they may have your same quiet courage. Amen.
