Who Was Saint Mateus Moreira?
Mateus Moreira was one of a group of Catholic laypeople and clergy in the Captaincy of Rio Grande, in what is now northeastern Brazil, killed in two related massacres at Cunhaú and Uruaçu in 1645. The victims were attending Mass or gathered in community when they were attacked by Dutch West India Company forces and allied Indigenous and Tapuia fighters during the Dutch-Portuguese colonial conflict then raging over control of Brazil’s sugar-producing northeast.
Historical Setting
The mid-seventeenth century saw the Dutch Republic and Portugal fighting for control of Brazil’s coastal captaincies. In this contest, religious identity became entangled with the wider colonial war: Calvinist Dutch forces and their allies at times targeted Catholic communities loyal to Portugal specifically because of their faith. The Cunhaú massacre struck worshipers gathered for Mass, and the Uruaçu massacre killed a larger group, including Moreira, shortly after.
Why the Church Remembers Saint Mateus Moreira
The Church remembers Mateus Moreira and his companions as ordinary lay Catholics killed for their faith rather than for any political or military role. Their deaths represent one of the earliest instances of Catholic martyrdom on Brazilian soil, and their 2017 canonization made them, together with their companions, the first saints born in Brazil to be formally recognized by the Church.
Canonization and Feast Day
The Martyrs of Cunhaú and Uruaçu, including Mateus Moreira, were beatified in 2000 by Pope John Paul II and canonized in 2017 by Pope Francis, after the customary investigation into the circumstances of their deaths and the required miracle.
What Catholics Can Learn Today
Their story reminds Catholics that ordinary lay believers, gathered simply for Mass or for community, have borne witness to the faith with their lives just as surely as clergy and religious. Catholics can draw from Moreira’s example a renewed appreciation for the ordinary act of gathering for the Eucharist, even when doing so carries real risk.
A Prayer to Saint Mateus Moreira
Saint Mateus Moreira, you and your companions were gathered in faith when death came upon you, and you did not turn away from Christ. Intercede for us, that we may value the gift of the Mass and remain faithful to our communities of faith whatever the cost. Amen.
