Saint Mary of Jesus Crucified, born Mariam Baouardy in Galilee in 1846, was a Discalced Carmelite nun who became known for extraordinary mystical experiences, including the stigmata, ecstasies, and reported levitation. Orphaned young and surviving a serious throat wound as a girl, she entered Carmel in France before helping found convents in Bethlehem and India, and died in Bethlehem in 1878 at age 32.

Who Was Saint Mary of Jesus Crucified?

Mariam Baouardy was born into a Greek Melkite Catholic family in Galilee, orphaned as a young child, and survived a near-fatal throat wound inflicted by a relative angered by her refusal of an arranged marriage. After years of hardship and service, she entered the Discalced Carmelites in France, where her superiors documented extensive mystical phenomena, including visible stigmata, before she helped establish new Carmelite convents, including one in Bethlehem, where she died.

Historical Setting

The nineteenth century saw a renewed missionary and religious expansion of Catholic orders into the Holy Land, and Mariam’s own background as an Arabic-speaking Eastern Catholic, entering a traditionally European religious order, made her an unusual and significant bridge figure between Western Carmelite spirituality and the Christian communities of the Middle East.
