Who Was Saint Marie-Thérèse du Cœur de Jésus Hanniset?

Marie-Thérèse du Cœur de Jésus Hanniset was one of the elder members of the Carmelite community of Compiègne, a group of sixteen nuns who kept their vowed life together in secret after French Revolutionary law dissolved their convent, until they were denounced, arrested, and condemned in the summer of 1794.

Historical Setting

Her death came during the Reign of Terror, when the Revolutionary tribunal in Paris was executing large numbers of people accused of counter-revolutionary sympathies, often on the strength of little more than a religious vocation maintained against the new laws.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Marie-Thérèse du Cœur de Jésus Hanniset

Along with her sisters, she is remembered for going to the scaffold calmly, renewing her religious vows aloud and singing hymns with the community rather than showing the fear or defiance the crowd expected, a witness contemporaries described as having visibly unsettled the usual atmosphere of a Paris execution.

Canonization and Feast Day

She was beatified with her community in 1906 and canonized by equivalent canonization in 2024, when Pope Francis extended sainthood to the sixteen Compiègne Carmelites as a group. Her feast is kept on July 17.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

Her age at death, older than most of her companions, is a reminder that a life of quiet, faithful religious observance, sustained over decades, can still be called on to bear its most public witness at the very end.
