Who Was Saint Lorenzo Ruiz?

Lorenzo Ruiz was a married layman living an ordinary life in Manila, working as a scribe and active in the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, when circumstances led him to accompany a group of Dominican missionaries on a voyage to Japan. There, amid one of the most severe anti-Christian persecutions in history, he was arrested, tortured, and ultimately executed rather than renounce his faith.

Historical Setting

Seventeenth-century Japan, under the Tokugawa shogunate, carried out a sustained and brutal campaign to eliminate Christianity from the country, executing missionaries and native converts alike through methods designed to maximize suffering and pressure recantation. Lorenzo, though not a missionary himself, was swept into this persecution simply through his association with the Dominican fathers he traveled with.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Lorenzo Ruiz

The Church honors Lorenzo Ruiz as a layman — husband and father — who, given the opportunity to save his life by apostatizing, reportedly declared his unwavering commitment to Christ even under torture. His canonization made him the first saint from the Philippines and a powerful symbol for Filipino Catholics both at home and around the world.

Canonization and Feast Day

Lorenzo Ruiz was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1981 and canonized by the same pope in 1987. His feast is celebrated on September 28, alongside his fellow martyrs of Japan, and he is honored as patron of the Philippines and of Filipinos living abroad.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

Lorenzo’s witness as an ordinary layman, not a priest or religious, who held fast to Christ under extreme pressure speaks powerfully to lay Catholics everywhere. His example shows that heroic fidelity is not reserved for the clergy but can be lived by any believer who takes their baptismal faith seriously.

A Prayer to Saint Lorenzo Ruiz

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, husband and martyr, patron of the Filipino people, obtain for all lay Catholics the courage to remain faithful to Christ whatever the cost may be. Amen.
