Who Was Saint Joseph of Anchieta?

Joseph of Anchieta entered the Society of Jesus as a young man and was sent to Brazil, where despite chronic poor health he became a central figure in the colony’s early Catholic mission. He helped found what became the city of Sao Paulo, mastered the Tupi language to compose the first grammar and catechetical texts for it, and worked as an educator, playwright, and diplomat, at times personally negotiating to prevent conflict between colonial settlers and indigenous groups.

Historical Setting

Sixteenth-century Brazil was in the early, often violent, stages of Portuguese colonization, marked by conflict between European settlers and indigenous peoples and by the challenge of evangelizing communities with radically different languages and customs. Jesuit missionaries such as Anchieta played a central role in this period, both spreading Catholicism and, at times, acting as intermediaries who sought to moderate the worst abuses of the colonial system.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Joseph of Anchieta

The Church remembers Joseph of Anchieta for his foundational role in the evangelization of Brazil and for his deep linguistic and cultural engagement with the indigenous peoples he served, an approach that went well beyond simply transplanting European Catholicism unchanged. His work as a peacemaker between colonizers and native communities is remembered alongside his direct missionary and educational labors.

Canonization and Feast Day

Joseph of Anchieta was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II and canonized in 2014 by Pope Francis, in recognition of his foundational missionary work in Brazil.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

Joseph of Anchieta’s commitment to learning the language and culture of the people he served, rather than requiring them to adapt entirely to his own, offers an enduring model for evangelization and cross-cultural ministry generally: real encounter and respect must precede effective communication of the Gospel.

A Prayer to Saint Joseph of Anchieta
