A Venezuelan physician known as the ‘doctor of the poor,’ widely venerated across Latin America and canonized in 2025.

Saint Jose Gregorio Hernandez Cisneros (1864-1919) was a Venezuelan layman and physician, trained partly in Paris, who returned to Venezuela to practice medicine and teach at the university while dedicating much of his professional life to treating the poor without charge. A member of the Secular Franciscans, he was widely venerated across Venezuela and beyond well before his formal canonization, and he died in Caracas in 1919 after being struck by a car while walking to purchase medicine for a patient.

Jose Gregorio Hernandez trained in medicine in Caracas and later in Paris, bringing modern medical science and equipment back to Venezuela, where he taught at the Central University and helped introduce advances such as the microscope to Venezuelan medical practice. Throughout his career he was known for treating poor patients free of charge and personally purchasing medicine for those who could not afford it, a devotion to the poor that grew directly out of his Catholic faith and his membership in the Secular Franciscan Order. He died after being struck by an automobile in Caracas while on an errand to obtain medicine for a patient.
