Iosephus Chang Sŏng-jib was a married lay Catholic of Korea who died in the Seoul prison on 27 May 1839 at fifty-two years old, during the opening months of that year’s Gihae persecution. He is one of the 103 Martyrs of Korea canonized in 1984.

Who Was Saint Iosephus Chang Sŏng-jib?

Unlike many of his fellow martyrs executed publicly at the city gates, Chang Sŏng-jib died within the Seoul prison itself, a death that the Church still honors as martyrdom, since it followed directly from his arrest and refusal to renounce the Catholic faith under interrogation.

Historical Setting

The Gihae persecution of 1839 filled Seoul’s prisons with arrested Catholics well before many of them ever reached a public execution site; conditions inside those prisons, combined with the treatment prisoners received while being pressed to apostatize, were often lethal in their own right.
