Ioannes Zhang Tianshen was a married lay catechist of Guizhou province, killed at Kaiyang on 18 February 1862 at fifty-six years old, the same day and place as his fellow catechist Ioannes Chen Xianheng. He is one of the 120 Martyrs of China canonized in 2000.

Who Was Saint Ioannes Zhang Tianshen?

Zhang Tianshen had built a household and a life of family responsibility in Guizhou before taking up the further work of a catechist, carrying instruction in the faith to Catholic communities alongside a married man’s ordinary daily obligations.

Historical Setting

China’s Catholic communities endured repeated local persecutions across the nineteenth century, well before the 1900 Boxer Uprising; in Guizhou during 1861 and 1862 hostility toward the small Christian minority flared into violence that took the lives of several catechists at Kaiyang, Zhang Tianshen and his companion Chen Xianheng among them, on the same February day.

Canonization and Feast Day

Ninety-one years passed between Zhang Tianshen’s 1862 martyrdom at Kaiyang and Pope Pius X’s 1909 beatification of him; canonization followed on 1 October 2000 among the 120 Martyrs of China, whose feast day is 9 July.

Being married and responsible for a household did not soften Zhang Tianshen’s willingness to serve as a catechist and to bear the risk that came with it. His witness speaks especially to Catholics balancing family duties with active service to the Church.
