Historical Setting

In the ninth century, Saints Cyril and Methodius developed a Slavic liturgy and script to evangelize the Slavic peoples of Great Moravia in their own language, a project that drew opposition from Frankish clergy who favored a Latin-only liturgy and who, after Methodius’s death in 885, moved to suppress his disciples and their Slavic-language mission.
