Historical Setting

In the mid-1880s, King Mwanga II of Buganda, threatened by the growing influence of Christian converts, both Catholic and Anglican, among pages and officials at his court, launched a persecution that led to the execution of dozens of young Christians over roughly a year, culminating in the mass execution at Namugongo in June 1886. Gonzaga Gonza was among those killed in the months surrounding that larger massacre.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Gonzaga Gonza

As a young convert to Catholicism at a royal court hostile to the new faith, Gonzaga Gonza faced direct pressure from the king to renounce Christianity and instead chose death, joining his companions in a witness that became foundational to the rapid growth of Catholicism in Uganda and East Africa in the decades that followed.

Canonization and Feast Day

He was beatified in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV and canonized on 18 October 1964 by Pope Paul VI, together with his companions, as the Uganda Martyrs. Their common feast day is 3 June.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

The Uganda Martyrs’ willingness to die as very young converts, often only recently baptized, shows how quickly and how deeply new faith can take root, strong enough to withstand a king’s direct threat of execution.
