Saint Giuse Tuân of Hưng Yên was a Vietnamese priest of the Order of Preachers who was put to death for his faith on 30 April 1861 in Hưng Yên province at about thirty-nine years old. He belongs to the large company of Vietnamese clergy, religious, and laypeople executed during the nineteenth-century imperial persecutions, honored together as the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam.

Who Was Saint Giuse Tuân of Hưng Yên?

This is one of the 117 Vietnamese Martyrs, priests, religious, and laypeople put to death between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries as successive Nguyễn emperors moved to suppress Catholicism as a foreign and destabilizing influence.

Historical Setting

Nineteenth-century Vietnam saw repeated waves of anti-Christian edicts under emperors Minh Mạng, Thiệu Trị, and Tự Đức, who viewed the growing Catholic community, tied in the official mind to European missionary orders, as a threat to the Confucian social order and to national sovereignty. Dominican friars from Spain had been working in Tonkin since the seventeenth century, training a native Vietnamese clergy who shared fully in the risks their foreign confreres faced. Priests caught exercising their ministry, along with catechists and ordinary believers who sheltered them, were routinely imprisoned, tortured to extract apostasy, and executed, often by beheading.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Giuse Tuân of Hưng Yên

As a Dominican priest, Giuse Tuân continued to serve the Catholic community of Hưng Yên despite edicts making that ministry a capital offense. His death, like those of his companions, was remembered by Vietnamese Catholics as an act of fidelity that helped sustain the Church through decades when the open practice of the faith carried mortal risk, and his memory now belongs to the wider veneration of the Vietnamese Martyrs as a group.

Canonization and Feast Day

Giuse Tuân of Hưng Yên was beatified in 1951 by Pope Pius XII and canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II, together with 116 companions, as the Martyrs of Vietnam. Their shared feast day is 24 November.
