Who Was Saint Giuse Nguyễn Văn Lựu?

Serving as a catechist in Western Cochin, in the far south of Vietnam, Nguyễn Văn Lựu ministered in a region somewhat more removed from the northern centers of earlier persecution under Minh Mạng, yet still fully within reach of Tự Đức’s renewed anti-Christian edicts once they were extended across the empire in the 1850s.

Historical Setting

Emperor Tự Đức’s persecution, though often associated with its most severe phase in the early 1860s, had already resumed in earnest by the early 1850s, extending the reach of anti-Christian enforcement into southern regions like Cochinchina that had experienced somewhat less intense persecution under his predecessors, and claiming experienced older catechists like Nguyễn Văn Lựu who had likely served their communities for decades.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Giuse Nguyễn Văn Lựu

Nguyễn Văn Lựu is remembered as a catechist of the southern Vietnamese Church whose long service extended into old age before the renewed persecution of the 1850s finally reached him.

Canonization and Feast Day

Nguyễn Văn Lựu’s beatification came in 1909 under Pius X, and his canonization followed nearly eighty years later, when John Paul II declared him and 116 companions saints of the universal Church on June 19, 1988.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

That persecution could resume and reach even the more distant southern provinces after a period of relative calm is a reminder that fidelity sometimes means remaining ready for renewed danger even after a season of apparent safety.
