Saints

Saint Giuse Nguyễn Duy Khang was a Vietnamese Catholic layman of Central Tonking, a catechist and member of the Lay Dominicans, executed at Hải Dương on December 6, 1861, at only about twenty-eight years old. His youth at the time of his martyrdom sets him among the younger generation of catechists caught up in the final, severe phase of persecution under Emperor Tự Đức.

Who Was Saint Giuse Nguyễn Duy Khang?
As a young catechist already formally committed to the Lay Dominican fraternity, Nguyễn Duy Khang had taken on a public teaching role within his Catholic community well before reaching thirty, at a time when that role alone was enough to mark him for arrest once the persecution in Central Tonking intensified in the early 1860s.
Historical Setting
The early 1860s saw some of the most severe persecution measures of Tự Đức’s reign, carried out even as the emperor faced mounting French military pressure that would soon force a shift in policy; young catechists across Tonkin, formed and committed early to lay religious life, found themselves at particular risk in these final and most violent years of the century-long campaign.
Why the Church Remembers Saint Giuse Nguyễn Duy Khang
Nguyễn Duy Khang is remembered as one of the youngest martyrs among this group, a young man who had already dedicated himself formally to religious instruction and paid for that dedication with his life before reaching thirty.
Canonization and Feast Day
As one of the youngest in this group, Nguyễn Duy Khang was beatified somewhat later than many companions, in 1906, and canonized with the full body of Vietnamese Martyrs on June 19, 1988, under Pope John Paul II.
What Catholics Can Learn Today
A young man’s early and complete commitment to teaching the faith, sustained even as persecution grew more dangerous, shows that youth is no obstacle to a costly and mature fidelity to Christ.
A Prayer to Saint Giuse Nguyễn Duy Khang
Saint Giuse Nguyễn Duy Khang, who gave your young life for the faith you taught to others, inspire young Catholics today to embrace their faith as fully and courageously as you embraced yours. Amen.
