Saint Bruno Serunkuma was a Ugandan layman martyred at Namugongo, near Mpigi, Uganda, on June 3, 1886, at approximately twenty-nine years of age. He is one of the group known as the Uganda Martyrs, young men of the royal court executed by King Mwanga II for refusing to abandon Christianity.

Who Was Saint Bruno Serunkuma?

Bruno Serunkuma was among the group of young Catholic and Anglican converts serving in the royal court of the Kingdom of Buganda who were executed at Namugongo in 1886 on the order of King Mwanga II, who saw their new faith as a threat to his authority. He died at approximately twenty-nine years of age, one of dozens of companions martyred in this same episode.

Historical Setting

Christianity had reached the Kingdom of Buganda, in what is now Uganda, only in the 1870s, and its rapid spread among young men close to the king alarmed Mwanga II, who ordered the execution of converts who refused to renounce their new faith and, in several cases, to submit to his other demands. The resulting martyrdoms of 1885-1887 became one of the defining events of African Catholic history.
