Saints
A deacon martyred at Ancyra in Galatia in 312, closely linked in tradition to the bishop-martyr Saint Clement of Ancyra.
Saint Agathangelus was a deacon martyred at Ancyra, in the Roman province of Galatia, in the year 312, at the very end of the pre-Constantinian persecutions. Tradition closely links him to Saint Clement, bishop of Ancyra, whose own long and much-embellished legend of repeated imprisonment and torture under several emperors culminated in martyrdom in the same city.

Who Was Saint Agathangelus?
Agathangelus served as a deacon in Ancyra and was martyred there in 312, a year before Constantine’s Edict of Milan would end the empire-wide persecution of Christians. Ancient tradition connects his martyrdom to that of Clement, the city’s bishop, whose own extended legend, more elaborate than most surviving martyr accounts, made him one of the more famous confessors of Galatia.
Historical Setting
Ancyra, an important city of central Asia Minor, endured persecution intermittently across the late third and early fourth centuries, with 312 falling in its final phase under Maximinus Daia in the eastern provinces, even as Constantine and Licinius were about to jointly proclaim toleration for the whole empire the following year.
Why the Church Remembers Saint Agathangelus
Agathangelus is remembered as a companion in martyrdom to the more prominently venerated Clement of Ancyra, sharing in the suffering of a local church that, according to tradition, endured an unusually protracted persecution before the era of toleration finally arrived.
Canonization and Feast Day
No formal canonisation process is recorded for Saint Agathangelus, as expected for an early-fourth-century martyr. His cult is ancient and local to Ancyra, preserved through the wider veneration accorded to Clement of Ancyra and his companions.
What Catholics Can Learn Today
Agathangelus’s martyrdom, coming so close to the empire’s turn toward toleration, is a poignant reminder of how many Christians gave their lives in the persecution’s very last hours, so near to a change in circumstance they would not live to see. His witness honors all who remain faithful up to the very end of a trial, even when relief is closer than they know.
A Prayer to Saint Agathangelus
Saint Agathangelus of Ancyra, you were martyred so close to the end of the age of persecution, faithful to the last. Give us your same perseverance in trials whose end we cannot see, trusting that God’s timing, even when hidden from us, is never too late. Amen.
