Returning to Confession After Years Away

You can return even if you cannot remember the prayers or the date of your last confession. Begin by telling the priest you have been away and would appreciate guidance.

Take the first step

Find the parish’s published confession time or contact the office to arrange an appointment. An appointment can be helpful when there is a long history to discuss; you do not have to explain personal sins to the receptionist. Ask simply for time with a priest.

Prepare without trying to reconstruct your whole life

Set aside a quiet period. Read an examination of conscience and note what you honestly remember. The purpose is a truthful confession, not an exhaustive autobiography. If a pattern continued for years, explain approximately how often and for how long rather than inventing an exact count.

A simple opening

“Father, I have been away from confession for many years. I want to return, but I am not sure how to do this. Could you help me?”

That opening gives the priest the information he needs to guide you. You can ask him to explain an unfamiliar word or repeat a question. If you have hearing, language or mobility needs, mention these when arranging the meeting.

Bring difficult circumstances into the conversation

If you have questions about marriage, a previous confession, baptism or receiving Communion, ask directly. A general webpage cannot decide every personal situation. You do not need to resolve every question by searching online before you approach a priest.

After confession

Carry out the penance and return to ordinary prayer and parish life. Choose one manageable change rather than ten promises made in a rush. If you experience persistent religious anxiety or an urge to repeat already-confessed sins, work with a regular confessor instead of consulting endless checklists.
