The messenger

For communicators, and for those waiting on news.

Gabriel appears three times in Scripture, and each time he is carrying news that changes everything: to Daniel, to Zechariah, and to Mary at Nazareth. He is the patron of messengers, broadcasters, postal workers and anyone whose job is to carry words accurately.

The Prayer

St. Gabriel the Archangel,
you carried the greatest message ever delivered
and you delivered it exactly.

Pray for all who communicate for a living:
that they tell the truth,
that they get it right,
and that they remember words have consequences.

Pray for me when I must say something difficult,
and when I am waiting for news I dread.

And obtain for me Mary's answer:
let it be done to me according to Your word. Amen.

About This Devotion

His feast is 29 September, with Michael and Raphael. He was named patron of telecommunications by Pius XII in 1951 — a decision that sounds quaint now and was, in fact, exactly right: the archangel of the message and the century of the message.
