Mother of the Blessed Virgin

For mothers, grandmothers and families.

Anne and Joachim raised the girl who would be the Mother of God, and Scripture says nothing about either of them. Everything we have comes from early tradition — which tells you that the Church wanted their names remembered.

The Prayer

Good St. Anne, mother of Mary and grandmother of Our Lord,
pray for our family.

You taught your daughter to pray;
teach us to teach ours.
You waited long for a child;
be with all who are waiting still.
You grew old in faith;
be with those who are growing old now,
and with those who care for them.

St. Anne and St. Joachim, pray for us. Amen.

About This Devotion

Their feast is 26 July. Devotion to Anne is especially strong in Brittany, Quebec and the Philippines. She is the patroness of grandmothers, of women in labour, of miners and of homemakers — a saint of the ordinary domestic world, which she has in common with her son-in-law.
