Prayer for the Pope

Prayers for Special Intentions

For the Holy Father and his intentions.

Catholics are called to pray for the Pope as the Vicar of Christ and the visible head of the Church on earth. This traditional prayer asks God to guide the Holy Father in the way of salvation and to grant him the grace to lead the Church faithfully.

The Prayer

Almighty and everlasting God,
have mercy upon Your servant our Holy Father the Pope,
and direct him, according to Your loving kindness,
in the way of everlasting salvation,
that, of Your gift, he may ever desire
that which is pleasing unto You
and may accomplish it with all his might.
Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

About This Prayer

The Pope holds the office of Bishop of Rome and successor of St. Peter, to whom Christ gave the keys of the kingdom (Matthew 16:18–19). Catholics are asked to pray for the Pope’s intentions each day, particularly as a condition for gaining a plenary indulgence. The current Pope’s special intentions for prayer are published monthly.
