Prayer for Healing

Prayers for Life

For the sick in body, mind and spirit

When you or someone you love needs healing.

Christ healed people constantly, and the Church has never stopped asking Him to. This prayer can be prayed for yourself or over someone else — a spouse, a child, a friend in hospital. It asks plainly for healing, and it asks for grace either way, because both are needed.

The Prayer

Lord Jesus, You went about doing good and healing all who were sick.
Come now and heal me.

Heal what is broken in my body,
quiet what is troubled in my mind,
and mend what is wounded in my spirit.

Where there is pain, bring relief.
Where there is fear, bring peace.
Where there is despair, bring hope.

And if this suffering is not to be taken from me,
give me the grace to carry it with You,
and to trust that You are near
even when I cannot feel You.

Into Your hands, Lord, I place my body, my life and my future.
Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.

A Prayer for Someone Else

Lord, I bring You [name], whom I love and cannot help.
You know what is wrong far better than the doctors do,
and better than I do.

Lay Your hand on them.
Give skill to those who treat them,
comfort to those who watch,
and rest to those who cannot sleep.

Restore them to health, if it be Your will,
and in every case give them peace. Amen.

When to Pray It

Before surgery, on receiving a diagnosis, in a hospital room, at a bedside, or on any of the long ordinary days of a chronic illness. The Church also offers the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick — for the seriously ill, before surgery, and for the frail elderly. It may be received more than once. Ask a priest; do not wait until the end.
