Prayer for a Deceased Parent

Prayers for the Dead

You can pray for your mother or father with gratitude, grief, unfinished questions or very few words. Catholic prayer for the dead entrusts the person to God’s mercy. It does not require you to deny the truth of the relationship.

A short traditional prayer

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

Prayer for my deceased mother

Merciful Father, I entrust my mother to You. Receive the love she gave and forgive her sins. Thank You for the good I received through her, including what I did not notice at the time. Comfort those who miss her. Grant her eternal rest, and help me live with faith, gratitude and kindness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for my deceased father

Merciful Father, I entrust my father to You. Remember the good he did, forgive his sins and receive him in Your mercy. Help me carry forward what was generous and true in his life. Be near to us in our grief, and grant him eternal rest. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

When the relationship was difficult

Lord, it was complicated between us, and death has not simplified it. I cannot pretend they were what they were not. But I can ask for mercy for them, and I do. Heal what was damaged between us. Give them rest, and give me peace. Help me seek support and live safely in the truth. Amen.

The mother, father and difficult-relationship prayers are original devotional wording for this site, not official liturgical texts. You may adapt them to your own circumstances.

Ways to remember and pray

  • Ask a parish about having a Mass offered for your parent.
  • Pray briefly on an anniversary, birthday or ordinary day when you remember them.
  • Offer an act of charity in their memory.
  • Visit the grave if this is possible and helpful; prayer is not limited to a particular location.

When you cannot find words

A name spoken in prayer is enough to begin. You can sit quietly, say the traditional prayer above, or ask someone to pray with you. Grief does not follow a timetable. If the relationship involved harm, prayer does not require excusing it or giving up appropriate boundaries and support.
