Prayer Before a Crucifix

Prayers for Special Intentions

St. Francis of Assisi

Prayed while gazing upon the Cross of Christ.

This simple but profound prayer was prayed by St. Francis of Assisi before the crucifix of San Damiano, from which Christ reportedly spoke to him: “Francis, go and repair my house.” It is a prayer of surrender, asking for the virtues needed to live the Gospel.

The Prayer

Most high, glorious God,
enlighten the darkness of my heart.
Give me right faith, certain hope, and perfect charity,
sense and knowledge, Lord,
that I may carry out Your holy and true command.
Amen.

About This Prayer

St. Francis of Assisi (1181–1226) prayed before the Byzantine crucifix of San Damiano around 1205, when he heard Christ say to him: “Francis, go and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin.” This moment marked the beginning of his conversion and his mission. The prayer he prayed reflects the essence of the Franciscan way: humility, faith, and total surrender to God’s will.
