Patron of those with cancer

For anyone facing a diagnosis.

St. Peregrine Laziosi was a Servite friar whose leg was so consumed by cancer that amputation was scheduled for the following morning. He spent the night in prayer before a crucifix. When the surgeon arrived, the leg was whole. He lived another twenty years and died at eighty.

Prayer for Each Day

O great St. Peregrine,
you have been called the Mighty Wonder-Worker
because of the numerous miracles
which you have obtained from God
for those who have had recourse to you.

For so many years you bore in your own flesh
this cancerous disease that destroys the very fibre of our being,
and who had recourse to the source of all grace
when the power of man could do no more.

You were favoured with the vision of Jesus
coming down from His cross to heal your affliction.
Ask of God and Our Lady the cure of the sick
whom we entrust to you [name them].

Aided in this way by your powerful intercession,
we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity,
a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy. Amen.

For the Person Praying It

Lord, I am afraid, and I am asking for healing.
If healing is not what You give,
give courage instead,
and let me not face this alone.
St. Peregrine, who knew this fear, pray for us. Amen.

About This Novena

His feast is 1 May. Many hospitals and cancer wards keep his image, and many dioceses hold an annual St. Peregrine Mass for the sick with the anointing of the sick. Ask your parish — these Masses are usually open to anyone.
