Litany of the Passion
Litanies
For Lent and Fridays
The Passion of Christ named event by event.
A private devotion prayed through Lent and on Fridays, moving through the Passion in sequence — the agony, the betrayal, the trial, the scourging, the cross — and asking mercy at each step.
The Litany
Lord, have mercy. — Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. — Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. — Lord, have mercy.
Christ, hear us. — Christ, graciously hear us.
God the Father of heaven, — have mercy on us.
God the Son, Redeemer of the world, — have mercy on us.
God the Holy Spirit, — have mercy on us.
Holy Trinity, one God, — have mercy on us.
To each of the following, respond: have mercy on us.
Jesus, in agony in the garden,
Jesus, sweating blood,
Jesus, comforted by an angel,
Jesus, betrayed with a kiss,
Jesus, bound and led away,
Jesus, abandoned by Your disciples,
Jesus, denied by Peter,
Jesus, struck in the face,
Jesus, falsely accused,
Jesus, declared worthy of death,
Jesus, mocked and spat upon,
Jesus, scourged at the pillar,
Jesus, crowned with thorns,
Jesus, clothed in purple and derided,
Jesus, condemned by Pilate,
Jesus, loaded with the cross,
Jesus, falling beneath its weight,
Jesus, meeting Your Mother,
Jesus, helped by Simon of Cyrene,
Jesus, comforting the women of Jerusalem,
Jesus, stripped of Your garments,
Jesus, nailed to the cross,
Jesus, praying for Your executioners,
Jesus, promising paradise to the thief,
Jesus, giving us Your Mother,
Jesus, forsaken and thirsting,
Jesus, dying for us,
Jesus, pierced with a lance,
Jesus, taken down from the cross,
Jesus, laid in the tomb.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, — spare us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, — graciously hear us, O Lord.
Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, — have mercy on us.
V. We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You.
R. Because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world.
The Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, who for our sake
endured the agony, the scourging, the thorns and the cross:
grant that we who venerate Your Passion on earth
may come to share the glory of Your resurrection in heaven,
where You live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.
