The Glorious Mysteries

Rosary Prayers

Prayed on Wednesday and Sunday

Resurrection, Ascension, Pentecost, and the crowning of Our Lady.

The Glorious Mysteries are the mysteries of what victory looks like. They begin in an empty tomb on Sunday morning and end with a woman crowned in heaven — which is to say, they begin with Christ’s triumph and end with what that triumph makes possible for us.

The Five Glorious Mysteries

1. The Resurrection

Christ rises from the dead on the third day, and the tomb is found empty (Mark 16:1-8). Fruit of the mystery: faith.

2. The Ascension

Forty days later, Jesus ascends to the Father, promising to be with His Church always (Acts 1:6-11). Fruit of the mystery: hope.

3. The Descent of the Holy Spirit

At Pentecost the Spirit comes upon the apostles as wind and fire, and the Church goes public (Acts 2:1-13). Fruit of the mystery: love and zeal.

4. The Assumption of Our Lady

At the end of her earthly life, Mary is taken up body and soul into heaven. Fruit of the mystery: a happy death.

5. The Coronation of Our Lady

Mary is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth, the woman clothed with the sun (Revelation 12:1). Fruit of the mystery: trust in Mary’s intercession.

About These Mysteries

The last two mysteries are not narrated in Scripture in the way the first three are; they are the Church’s faith about what happened to the woman who said yes. The Assumption was solemnly defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Both mysteries tell the same truth from two sides: what Christ has done for His Mother, He intends to do for His whole Church.
