The Glory Be in Latin

The doxology that ends nearly every Catholic prayer.

Six lines, prayed at the end of every psalm in the Divine Office, after every decade of the Rosary, and at the close of countless devotions. It is the shortest complete statement of the Trinity the Church has.

In Latin

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.
Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper,
et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

In English

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now,
and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

How to Say It

• Gloria — GLO-ree-ah.
• Filio — FEE-lee-oh.
• Spiritui Sancto — spee-REE-too-ee SANK-toh.
• Saecula saeculorum — SAY-koo-lah say-koo-LOH-room.

About This Prayer

The second half was added in the fourth century, during the Arian controversy, as a deliberate assertion: the Son was not made at some point in time but was glorious as it was in the beginning. What sounds like a decorative flourish is in fact a doctrinal line drawn in the sand.
