Who Was Saint Pierre-Henri Dorie?
Pierre-Henri Dorie arrived in Korea as a young missionary priest of the Paris Foreign Missions Society just as the 1866 persecution was breaking out, one of the youngest of the foreign missionaries caught in the sweeping arrests that followed. He was executed at Saenamteo, a riverside execution ground outside Seoul that became the site of numerous Christian martyrdoms, on March 7, 1866, at just twenty-six years old, barely having had time to begin his intended ministry.
Historical Setting
Saenamteo, on the banks of the Han River near Seoul, became one of the principal execution sites during the 1866 persecution, where Korean authorities put to death both foreign missionary bishops and priests and large numbers of Korean Catholics in a coordinated campaign to eliminate the Church’s leadership and terrify its followers into apostasy.
Why the Church Remembers Saint Pierre-Henri Dorie
The Church remembers Pierre-Henri Dorie as one of the youngest missionaries to die in the 1866 Korean persecution, a priest whose ministry was cut short almost before it began, yet whose readiness to go to Korea at all, knowing the risk, stands as its own complete witness.
Canonization and Feast Day
Pope John Paul II canonized Pierre-Henri Dorie in Seoul on May 6, 1984, together with 102 other Korean Martyrs, following his beatification in 1968, honoring a group whose deaths spanned Korean laypeople and the foreign clergy who served alongside them.
What Catholics Can Learn Today
Dorie’s martyrdom so soon after arrival shows that missionary generosity does not require years of visible fruit to be complete in God’s eyes — the willingness to go, fully aware of the danger, was itself the offering. His example encourages young Catholics discerning missionary vocations to trust that even a short life given wholly to Christ is never wasted.
A Prayer to Saint Pierre-Henri Dorie
Saint Pierre-Henri Dorie, young missionary and martyr of Korea, you gave your life to Christ almost as soon as you arrived on mission. Inspire young Catholics discerning a call to serve the Church, that they may respond with the same readiness and total generosity you showed. Amen.
