Who Was Saint Paulus Liu Jinde?
Paulus Liu Jinde was a married Catholic layman of the vicariate of Southeastern Chi-Li in northern China, in the region known today as Hebei province. The surviving record identifies him as an ordinary member of the local Church rather than a cleric, a husband caught up in the violent anti-Christian upheaval that swept northern China in the summer of 1900. He was killed at Lanziqiao, near Hengshui, at roughly seventy-eight years of age.
Historical Setting
1900 was the year of the Boxer Rebellion, when the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists, tolerated for a time by the Qing court, attacked foreign missionaries and the Chinese Catholics who had joined their congregations. Hebei province, then called Chi-Li, saw some of the heaviest killing, and whole village communities of Chinese Catholics — catechists, farmers, wives, elders, and children — were put to death alongside the missionary priests they had come to know.
Why the Church Remembers Saint Paulus Liu Jinde
Paulus Liu Jinde is remembered as one of the many ordinary lay Chinese Catholics who paid for their baptism with their lives in 1900 rather than renounce the faith. He is honored today collectively among the 120 Martyrs of China, a group that includes bishops and priests but consists mostly of laypeople like him — catechists, parents, and villagers whose only public act of witness was refusing to abandon the Church under threat of death.
Canonization and Feast Day
Paulus Liu Jinde was beatified in 1955 and canonized on October 1, 2000, when Pope John Paul II raised the whole group of 120 Martyrs of China — Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions — to the altars together. Their shared feast is kept on July 9.
What Catholics Can Learn Today
Paulus Liu Jinde’s witness is unremarkable in every worldly sense except the one that matters: he was a married layman with no office in the Church, and he died rather than deny his faith. His example is a reminder that holiness is not reserved for priests or religious — it can be lived, and paid for, by anyone who takes baptism seriously.
A Prayer to Saint Paulus Liu Jinde
Saint Paulus Liu Jinde, faithful husband and martyr of the Chinese Church, you held fast to Christ when the cost was everything. Obtain for us the courage to remain steadfast in our own ordinary lives, whatever pressure comes against our faith. Amen.
