Saints

An Italian teenager known for his devotion to the Eucharist and his online catalogue of eucharistic miracles, who died of leukemia in 2006 at fifteen.

Carlo Acutis was a lay Catholic teenager, raised mainly in Milan after being born in London, known for a Eucharistic devotion unusual for his age and for using his skill with computers to build a website documenting eucharistic miracles from around the world. He died of acute leukemia on 12 October 2006 at age fifteen and was buried, at his own wish, in Assisi. He was beatified in 2020 during the pontificate of Pope Francis and canonized by Pope Leo XIV on 7 September 2025, making him one of the first saints from the millennial generation.

Who Was Saint Carlo Acutis?

Carlo Acutis grew up in Milan in a family that was not especially devout at first, yet from childhood he showed a deep, self-directed attraction to the Mass and Eucharistic adoration, attending daily Mass and praying the rosary from a young age. Gifted with computers well beyond his years, he used that talent to build and maintain a website cataloguing reported eucharistic miracles from across the centuries and around the world, presenting them in a way accessible to other young people. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia in 2006 and died within weeks, offering his suffering, by his own account, for the Church and for Pope Benedict XVI.

Historical Setting

Carlo’s short life spanned the years when the internet was becoming a central part of everyday life for young people worldwide, and his instinct to use that new technology in service of catechesis rather than merely entertainment set him apart from most of his peers. His death at Monza, near Milan, came amid growing Church attention to how digital media could be harnessed for evangelization, a concern his own project anticipated well before it became a common pastoral theme.

Why the Church Remembers Saint Carlo Acutis

The Church remembers Carlo Acutis for combining an intense, unaffected love of the Eucharist with an entirely modern set of skills and interests, showing that sanctity is not confined to any particular era’s tools or culture. His grave in Assisi, where his body is displayed for veneration, draws large numbers of young pilgrims, and he is frequently held up as evidence that deep faith remains possible for a teenager fully at home in contemporary digital life.

Canonization and Feast Day

Carlo was beatified in Assisi in 2020 during the pontificate of Pope Francis. Pope Leo XIV canonized him alongside Pier Giorgio Frassati in St Peter’s Square on 7 September 2025. His feast day is 12 October; the liturgical rank and celebration in a particular place depend on the applicable calendar.

What Catholics Can Learn Today

Carlo Acutis shows that ordinary daily practices, Mass, adoration, prayer, sustained with sincerity through the years of childhood and adolescence, can form a genuinely deep sanctity, and that the tools of modern life, used with purpose, can serve rather than distract from a life centered on Christ.
