O Sacrum Convivium
Eucharistic Prayers
O sacred banquet
The antiphon of Corpus Christi, in three lines.
Written by St. Thomas Aquinas as the Magnificat antiphon for Second Vespers of Corpus Christi. In three lines it states what the Eucharist is: the past remembered, the present filled with grace, and the future promised.
In Latin
O sacrum convivium,
in quo Christus sumitur;
recolitur memoria passionis eius;
mens impletur gratia;
et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur. Alleluia.
In English
O sacred banquet,
in which Christ is received;
the memory of His Passion is renewed;
the mind is filled with grace;
and a pledge of future glory is given to us. Alleluia.
The Versicle
V. You have given them bread from heaven.
R. Containing in itself all sweetness.
About This Antiphon
Three tenses in one sentence — recolitur, past; impletur, present; datur, future. The Church has never improved on it as a summary of what happens at Communion, which is presumably why it is sung at nearly every Benediction.
