Prayer for the Souls in Purgatory
Prayers for the Faithful Departed
For the holy souls awaiting the fullness of God’s presence.
The Church teaches that the souls in Purgatory are certain of salvation but are being purified before entering Heaven. Catholics are urged to pray for them, especially through the Mass, the Rosary, indulgences, and this traditional prayer of intercession.
The Prayer
O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of Your departed servants the remission of all their sins. May they obtain, through our pious supplications, that pardon which they have always desired. Who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.
About This Prayer
The doctrine of Purgatory is defined in the Councils of Florence (1439) and Trent (1563). It holds that those who die in God’s friendship but still imperfectly purified undergo purification — not punishment — before entering the beatific vision. The living can assist them through prayer, good works, and indulgences. November 2, All Souls’ Day, is especially dedicated to praying for them.
