Chaplet of St. Michael

Chaplets

A nine-group chaplet honouring the nine Choirs of Angels.

The Chaplet of St. Michael the Archangel was reportedly revealed to a Portuguese Carmelite nun, Antonia d’Astonac, in the 18th century, when St. Michael appeared and promised special graces to those who prayed it. Pope Pius IX granted an indulgence for its recitation.

The Prayer

Begin with one Our Father and one Hail Mary
in honour of each of the nine Choirs of Angels.

Salutation for each Choir (example for the Seraphim):
By the intercession of St. Michael
and the celestial Choir of Seraphim,
may the Lord make us worthy
to burn with the fire of perfect charity.
Amen.

Continue similarly for: Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations,
Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels.

Conclude with four Our Fathers in honour of
St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael,
and your Guardian Angel.

About This Prayer

The nine Choirs of Angels are drawn from the New Testament (Ephesians 1:21; Colossians 1:16) and were systematised by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. St. Michael is the prince of the heavenly hosts, the protector of the Church, and the angel who accompanies souls to judgment.
